Establishment
The Japan Aeromedical Research Center (JARC) was established as a foundation in June 1984 with the permission of the Minister of Transport. It aims to conduct aviation medical examinations for aircrew, promote medical and ergonomic research on aviation, including collection of medical data, and disseminate and communicate knowledge of aviation medicine, thereby contributing to the safety of civil aviation.
Activities
To achieve the purpose for which it was established, JARC is engaged mainly in the following operations:
Aviation medical examinations
JARC, as a designated aviation medical institution designated by the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, conducts aviation medical examinations and additional medical examinations applicable to aircrew aged 60 or older who are engaged in air transport services, as well as medical examinations for admission tests under contracts with pilot training schools.
Aviation medicine research
JARC surveys and researches new issues related to aviation medicine and analyzes the results of aviation medical examinations. Through these activities, it endeavors to improve the aviation medical examination system and solve problems related to aviation medicine.

- Research on pilots’ use of medications
- Research on cardiovascular diseases
- Research on lifestyle diseases, gout attacks and urolithiasis of pilots
- Research on sleep apnea syndrome
- Research on pilots’ visual fields
- Research on LASIK
- Fact-finding survey and research on the operation of aviation medical examination systems in Europe and North America
Knowledge dissemination and guidance
JARC holds workshops and provides consultation services for designated aviation medical examiners, holds lectures about aviation medicine at the request of aircrew organizations, and issues publications such as “Guidance for Aviation Medical Examination,” “Clinical Aviation Medicine” and “Circular on Health Management of Crew.” Through these activities, it endeavors to disseminate knowledge about aviation medicine and provide information on aviation medicine.
Organization and operation
- JARC is operated by 15 full-time staff including three designated aviation medical examiners and 17 part-time staff under the council.
- JARC’s operations are funded mainly by fund earnings, membership fees and revenue from medical examination fees.
